Computing

"My love of computing comes from my fascination with how technology shapes the world around us. As Computing lead across the school, I enjoy seeing children explore new ideas, solve problems, and create their own digital projects. I love how computing encourages creativity, logical thinking, and resilience when things don’t work the first time.

It is important to me to inspire a lifelong interest in technology through engaging and meaningful computing lessons. Watching children learn to code, design, and understand how systems work is a real highlight. Computing isn’t just about using devices; it’s about understanding how they work and thinking critically about the digital world.

Seeing how children develop their skills and apply them across other subjects is fantastic, especially as they grow in confidence and independence."

Impact

At St Andrew’s our intent for computing is to ensure children are competent with the fundamental principles behind computer programming and are confident in using technology safely within the classroom and at home. We aim to produce children that are courageous and self-assured enough to independently create and debug basic programmes and to be able to take ownership for responsible and effective internet use.

In EYFS and KS1 the aim is to develop the children's familiarity with computing hardware and software and to start to install the critical and creative thinking skills that are needed in the subject.  We believe this will prepare them for KS2, where children will be able apply the skills to areas of greater complexity.

Implementation

At St Andrew’s our aim is to inspire pupils to become curious, creative and confident users of technology, developing the skills to think like computing experts.

We want children to question, explore and make sense of the digital world around them. Through a range of practical experiences, pupils learn to collect, present and analyse information, as well as design and create their own digital content. We place a strong emphasis on problem-solving, resilience and logical thinking.

Our Computing curriculum helps pupils understand how technology shapes our lives both now and in the future. We aim to equip children with the knowledge and skills they need to become responsible, informed and active digital citizens who can contribute positively to the world around them.

We also ensure that our curriculum supports all learners. Lessons are carefully structured to be accessible and ambitious, allowing every child to participate, build confidence and achieve their full potential.
