Welcome to Forest School
Forest School is an inspiring, child-centred approach to learning that gives children regular opportunities to explore, discover and develop through experiences in the natural environment. At St Andrew’s, our Forest School provision aims to build children’s confidence, independence, resilience, creativity and teamwork, while developing a lifelong connection with the natural world.
The Six Principles of Forest School
Forest School is underpinned by six key principles:
- Long-term process – Forest School takes place regularly over time, rather than as a one-off outdoor activity.
- Natural environment – Sessions take place in a woodland or natural setting, supporting children to develop a relationship with the natural world.
- Community and development – Forest School promotes the holistic development of everyone involved, helping to build resilient, confident, independent and creative learners.
- Supported risk-taking – Children are given opportunities to take supported and appropriate risks, helping them learn to manage challenges safely.
- Qualified practitioners – Sessions are led by appropriately qualified Forest School practitioners who continually develop their professional practice.
- Learner-centred approach – Forest School uses a range of learner-centred processes, allowing children’s interests, ideas and discoveries to help shape their experiences.
