Physical Education

At St Andrew's PE is lead by Mr Leverington.

"My love for PE started the moment I entered the education profession and saw the impact physical sport could have across a whole school. Since joining St Andrew’s I have been able to lead our PE provision and offer our children the opportunity to try new sports through our extra curricular offering. This allows me to build relationships beyond my classroom as I work with children and families from EYFS through to Year 6. Being the PE Lead here is deeply rewarding because it allows me to build a foundational love for physical activity across the school. As a subject, I believe PE directly boosts children’s health (both physically and mentally) while enhancing their confidence, friendships and social skills. Sport can have a lasting impact beyond the classroom, turning young learners into active, healthy and competitive individuals."

Mr Leverington - PE Leader

Intent

PE is a vital part of school life and ultimately a child’s future well-being.  It is therefore our intent to provide an inclusive, broad and balanced PE curriculum that ensures all children will benefit, whether through improving their confidence in existing skills, learning new skills or being introduced to new sports, clubs, teams and organisations.

It is our intent to ensure children understand the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle and to equip them with the tools to do so through health and well-being education. Children must understand how to take care of themselves both physically and mentally in order to be successful as adults.

Beyond merely a subject, we believe that participation in sporting activity is a key element of developing a school in which pupils are proud of the community in which they belong. Therefore, great emphasis is placed upon additional sporting opportunities beyond the lesson within after-school clubs, inter-house and inter-school competition and festivals. We believe this links directly with our school values and is another way in which we can positively engage with our local community and be active citizens within it.

Implementation

At St Andrew’s, we ensure that teachers plan exciting and engaging lessons across all areas of the PE curriculum, providing a broad and balanced experience for every child. Throughout the school day, pupils are offered a wide variety of sporting activities, with teachers actively promoting their own interests to inspire children to try something new. Our curriculum introduces pupils to a diverse range of games, dance, gymnastics, and swimming, alongside opportunities to participate in intra-school competitions each term organised by our Sports Captains. All children take part in at least two hours of physical activity every week, with further opportunities available through extra-curricular clubs before and after school. We also foster strong partnerships with local sporting organisations to encourage participation beyond school. PE at St Andrew’s delivers challenging and enjoyable learning through activities such as invasion games, net and wall games, striking and fielding, gymnastics, dance, swimming, and outdoor and adventurous activities. Pupils are regularly invited to take part in inclusive competitive events within the local area, supported by a comprehensive sporting calendar, helping to develop teamwork, leadership skills, and a strong sense of enjoyment.

Impact

The impact of our PE curriculum is that children develop essential life skills, becoming physically literate and lifelong active learners. They build a positive attitude towards physical education and sport, increasing their activity levels both in school and at home while making informed decisions about their health, including diet and exercise. Through the wide range of opportunities and experiences provided, we equip our pupils with the skills, confidence, and enthusiasm needed to foster a lasting love of sport and physical activity.
