"As a subject lead, my passion for Spanish is rooted in both personal and professional experiences. After graduating from university, I had the incredible opportunity to work in Barcelona, where I taught English as a foreign language. Living and working in such a vibrant, culturally rich city deepened my appreciation for the Spanish language and its diverse dialects. Additionally, my travels through South America allowed me to immerse myself in Latin American culture and language, further enriching my understanding of the Spanish-speaking world. I believe that learning a foreign language not only enhances students’ communication skills but also broadens their horizons and fosters a sense of global citizenship. Sharing this passion with students inspires them to connect with different cultures and see the world from new perspectives"
Intent
Our Spanish curriculum aims to provide a broad and balanced understanding of a different country and culture. We believe that teaching another language is key to children, including those who are disadvantaged and those with SEND, developing understanding and respect of other cultures. We aim to teach the children a broad range of conversational vocabulary that will enable them to engage with Spanish culture. We also aim to give them an understanding of life in Spain by comparing it to their own life. This will help them develop wider, more global friendships, by being able to converse with Spanish children. Children are encouraged to speak, read and write in Spanish throughout Key Stage 2, thus giving them the confidence to use the language, or to go on to learn further languages of their own choosing. This is underpinned by our values of Friendship, Courage and Confidence.
Implementation
Every child in Key Stage 2 will have a weekly Spanish lesson. The journey begins with introductory lessons that incorporate formal teaching alongside engaging educational games, designed to develop foundational language skills. As pupils progress through the curriculum, they begin to demonstrate an understanding of basic grammar, as well as listening, reading, and writing skills. To celebrate Hispanic culture, we host an exciting Spanish Day once a year, providing students with a vibrant and immersive cultural experience.

Impact
Through high-quality first teaching in Modern Foreign Languages, we will observe the positive impact of the subject in various ways. Children will have meaningful opportunities to communicate with each other in Spanish, fostering confidence and collaboration. They will understand how language skills can be transferred and applied across different languages. Additionally, pupils will become aware that language has a structure, and that this structure varies from one language to another. Students will also enrich their language learning by gaining a deeper understanding of Spanish culture, fostering a broader appreciation of the world around them.
